The Twelve Holy Nights

The Twelve Holy Nights, (known as "Rauhnächte") are the mystical days between Christmas (December 25) and Epiphany (January 6). According to ancient folklore, these nights are considered a powerful time when the veil between worlds is thin, making it ideal for reflection, divination, and setting intentions for the coming year. Each of the 12 nights symbolizes a month in the new year.

What goes on this board

25.12 – Letting go

What would you like to leave behind? Think about any patterns, mindsets, or routines that might be holding you back. Are there any unresolved experiences you need to work through?

Suitable images: Picture a dandelion scattering its seeds in the wind, or an open window with billowing curtains. Think of pristine snow covering the ground, or ripples spreading across still water – images that capture that sense of fresh starts and infinite possibilities.

26.12 – Gratitude

What brought joy to your life this year? Who made a positive difference, and which moments stand out as particularly meaningful? Where did you find yourself feeling truly content and fulfilled?

Suitable images: Imagine a garden in full bloom, overflowing with life. Consider capturing moments of pure joy: morning light streaming through trees, friends gathered around a feast, or hands cupped to hold something precious. These images remind us of life's everyday riches.

27.12 – Relationships

Who are the people that bring out the best in you? Think about your relationships – are there any that need some attention or care? Which friendships would you like to deepen, and are there perhaps some connections that have run their course?

Suitable images: Look for tender moments that speak to the heart: an elderly couple walking hand in hand, birds nestled together on a branch, or the gentle meeting of river and sea. Choose images that reflect the warm, nurturing relationships you want to cultivate.

28.12 – Work life

How do you feel about your work life? Does your current role align with your purpose, or are you sensing it's time for something new? What would you like to achieve professionally in the year ahead?

Suitable images: Think of a soaring eagle against a clear sky, or stairs spiraling up through rays of light. Consider capturing someone standing at the summit of their own mountain, or a small seed breaking through soil – images that embody progress, achievement, and untapped potential.

29.12 – Health

How's your wellbeing - both body and mind? Are there aspects of your health you'd like to focus on? What changes could help you feel more energized and balanced in your daily life?

Suitable images: Picture the kind of energy you want to embody: someone dancing in morning sunlight, crystal-clear waters lapping at shore, or dewdrops glistening on fresh leaves. Choose images that make you feel alive just by looking at them, that remind you how good it feels to be healthy and strong.

30.12 – Finances and abundance

What is your current financial situation? Are you comfortable with where things stand, or would you like to make some adjustments? Looking ahead to next year, what are your financial aspirations?

Suitable images: Rather than traditional symbols of wealth, consider images that represent true richness: a key to a new home, a path winding through possibilities, or doors opening to new horizons. Look for visuals that capture not just material wealth, but the freedom and peace of mind that financial security brings.

31.12 – Visions for the new year

What makes your heart race with excitement when you think about the year ahead? Which goals feel almost too big to say out loud? What's holding you back from reaching for the stars?

Suitable images: Dare to capture your most audacious visions – perhaps a cozy writing nook with ocean views, footprints leading to undiscovered places, or a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. Choose images that make your heart flutter with possibility, that represent those dreams you barely whisper to yourself.

01.01 – New beginnings

Is there a part of your life that's ready for a complete reset? What changes have been whispering in the back of your mind? How would you like to reinvent yourself in the coming year?

Suitable images: Think of nature's own symbols of beginning: the first green shoot pushing through spring soil, dawn's earliest light touching the horizon, or a bird poised for flight. Look for images that capture that magical moment when something new is about to unfold.

02.01 – Inner child and joy

Think back - when was the last time you had one of those deep, genuine belly laughs? What could you do to bring more moments of pure happiness into your everyday life? Are there old passions or interests you'd love to rediscover?

Suitable images: Seek out scenes that instantly lift your spirit: children splashing in summer puddles, leaves dancing in the wind, or soap bubbles catching rainbow light. Find those images that remind you of life's simple, uncontained moments of delight – the ones that make you smile just by looking at them.

03.01 – Harmony and beauty

Where do you find moments of true peace? Think about harmony - how important is it in your life? How do you handle conflict when it arises? Consider your relationship with beauty - both in your surroundings and in yourself. Are you kind to yourself when you look in the mirror?

Suitable images: Consider what harmony looks like to you – perhaps it's the perfect symmetry of a seashell, friends sharing tea in dappled shade, or the graceful flow of a dancer in motion. Look for images that capture those moments when everything feels just right, when outer beauty reflects inner peace.

04.01 – Spiritual guidance

How much do you trust your gut feelings? Where in your life could you benefit from listening more to your inner voice? If spirituality is part of your journey, how might you deepen that connection?

Suitable images: Seek out visuals that speak to your soul's quiet knowing – maybe it's ancient tree roots reaching deep into earth, concentric ripples on still water, or stars scattered across a night sky. Choose images that remind you to pause, breathe, and listen to your inner voice.

05.01 – Manifestation

When you think about your dreams and goals, which ones light a fire in you? What concrete steps could you take this coming year to turn these dreams into reality?

Suitable images: Now step back and let your eyes wander over this tapestry of dreams and intentions. Each image is a thread in the fabric of your future, each symbol a seed of possibility. Let this visual meditation be your compass for the journey ahead, a reminder of all that you're calling into your life.

Why make this board

Between Christmas and Epiphany, things go quiet. Work pauses, the days are short, and the old year isn't quite over yet. That's the time this board is made for. The Twelve Holy Nights, Rauhnächte in German, are an old Alpine custom: twelve nights from December 25 to January 5, each standing for one month of the coming year. The board has twelve areas, one per night. You start with letting go and gratitude, move through relationships, work, health and money to your visions and a fresh start, and close with manifestation. Each night comes with questions to answer in your own time and ideas for pictures that fit. So you don't have to plan your whole year in one evening. One or two pictures a night is enough, and by January 6 your board for the new year is ready. The board is free in the app.

A good time to start

  • On December 25, when the first night begins, or from December 21 if you follow the regional tradition that starts with St. Thomas's Night.
  • When you're doing the 13 wishes ritual and want to give your wishes pictures.
  • When you want a calm ritual for each evening between the years, with tea and a candle instead of scissors and glue.
  • If you missed the first night: start with tonight's and catch up on the others.
  • When you'd like your new year's vision board to come together piece by piece over twelve evenings.
  • Through the year, when a new month begins: look back at the night that stands for it and what you wrote then.
