A couples vision board holds the life you're building together: how you treat each other, what you're saving for, where you want to live and where you want to go next. You can make one in a single evening, as a date night.

I've made dozens of vision boards since I was a teenager, and I've been building VISIYA, a vision board app for iPhone and iPad, since 2022. I make my own board around my birthday. For a couple, the natural date is your anniversary.

Below you'll find a one-hour date-night plan, 16 questions to ask each other, a free printable worksheet and a rule for the goals you don't agree on.

What is a couples vision board?

It's a vision board with only "we" goals on it: things you both want, shown in pictures, each with a real place or a date. Your personal goals stay on your own boards.

In VISIYA, the Couples board is one of the six free templates. It has four areas:

  • What matters most
  • Relationship principles
  • Mutual goals
  • Couple adventures and dates

Keep it small. About three goals per area gives you around 12 pictures, and you can take the whole board in at a glance. If you've never made a board before, my guide on how to make a vision board covers the basics.

How do you make one together?

Turn it into a date night of about an hour, in four 15-minute blocks. You answer the questions apart first, then compare, then choose, then build.

Pick a night that already means something: your anniversary, a quiet evening between Christmas and New Year's, or Valentine's Day at home instead of a packed restaurant. Order takeout and put both phones on Do Not Disturb.

  1. 0:00 to 0:15, apart. Each of you takes a worksheet and answers the 16 questions alone. No peeking. Short answers are fine.
  2. 0:15 to 0:30, compare. Take turns reading your answers, one question at a time. Listen first, ask second. Where you both wrote something close, check "Goes on the board."
  3. 0:30 to 0:45, pick. Keep about three goals per area. For each area, write down what could get in your way and a first step: who does what, by when.
  4. 0:45 to 1:00, build. On paper or in the app. One picture per goal, a real place or a date, and one sentence per area in your own words.

Why apart first? When you answer together, whoever talks faster sets the agenda and the other one nods along. Fifteen quiet minutes give each of you a real answer to bring to the table.

Then, that same week, do one small thing from the board. Book the table for your next date, or put the first $20 in the trip jar. More ideas in how to activate a vision board.

What questions should you ask each other?

Ask questions each of you can answer alone, with something concrete at the end: a place, a number, a date. Here are the 16 from the worksheet, four for each area of the board.

What matters most

  1. What's one thing about our life right now that you'd fight to keep?
  2. What would make you feel secure about money: a savings cushion, a paid-off credit card, something else?
  3. When work and family both pull at us, what do we protect first?
  4. What do you want our home to feel like on a regular weeknight?

Relationship principles

  1. What's one rule for how we argue, like no fighting over text?
  2. What helps you most after a rough day: space, a hug or a plan?
  3. Which daily habit would make you feel closer, like phones away at dinner or a walk after work?
  4. What's one thing I do that really makes you feel loved?

Mutual goals

  1. Where do you see us living in three years: city, suburb or small town, and in which state?
  2. What should we save for first, and how much could we put in each month?
  3. What do you want us to have finished by this time next year?
  4. Which big decision should we make this year, and by when?

Couple adventures and dates

  1. Where's the one trip you want us to take in the next 12 months?
  2. What's something neither of us has done that we could try together?
  3. How often do we want a real date night, and who plans the next one?
  4. What free or cheap adventure could we fit in this month?

What goes on a couples vision board?

Four areas, about three goals each, and only what you both checked. Use your own photos, a real place, a date and one sentence per area in your own words.

Area What to put on it
What matters most Staying healthy, being financially secure, staying strong for each other, giving your kids the best
Relationship principles Open communication, caring for each other, trust and loyalty, your one rule for arguing
Mutual goals Pictures that reflect both your tastes: the next trip, a savings number, buying your first home
Couple adventures and dates Places to visit, things to do together, a trip at the same time every year, a standing date night

Leave off:

  • Other couples' photos. #couplegoals pictures show someone else's life, and you'll end up measuring yours against it.
  • A dream wedding you aren't planning. If you are, the Wedding board is a VISIYA Plus template built for that.
  • Anything one of you only agreed to so the evening would end.

Personal goals, like a promotion or a marathon, go on your own boards. Cheering each other on is allowed, and it's a good thing to say out loud that night.

What if you want different things?

A goal one of you can't say yes to goes on the board as a question card, with no picture yet. Write it as a note with a deadline: "City or country? Decide by summer." It's honest, and it's on the agenda.

In VISIYA, notes are tiles on the board, so the question card sits right next to your pictures. You'll both see it every time you open the board.

Don't vote and don't trade. "I'll take your boat if you take my dog" fills a board with things each of you only half wants. One open question is better than two quiet compromises.

Some questions take longer than a summer. That's fine. Move the deadline, keep the card, and talk about it on your next check-in.

Paper or app?

Paper is great for the date night itself, and the app puts the board on both your phones, where you'll actually see it. You can do both.

For paper, print the free Couples board PDF from the Couples template page, grab a poster board, glue and your printed photos. The vision board supplies page has the full list.

In VISIYA, it takes a few minutes:

  1. Open the app and choose "Vision Board for Couples" from the free templates. Give it a name, like "Us two."
  2. Add pictures to each area, from your camera roll or the app's image search.
  3. Tap the menu (•••) on the board, then "Invite collaborators." On the "Dream together" sheet, tap "Share invitation" and send the code to your partner.
  4. Your partner opens VISIYA, taps "Join a board" and enters the code. It works once and is valid for 12 hours.

After that, you can both add pictures, and each tile shows "Added by" with the name. Your partner joins free; on the free plan it's the one board you both have. VISIYA runs on iPhone and iPad only, so you'll both need one.

I use the same feature for VISIYA itself: I share a board of goals for the app with one other person. So far we've marked 6 of 30 as fulfilled.

More on building it on screen in how to make a vision board on your phone.

How do you keep it going?

Keep it where you'll both see it every day, and review it once a year on your anniversary: mark what came true, drop what no longer fits.

  • On your anniversary, go through every goal. In VISIYA, tap "Mark as fulfilled" and the board shows how many you've done, like "4/12 fulfilled."
  • On New Year's, do a shorter check. If you're already planning the year ahead, my 2027 vision board page has a plan for that.
  • Every week, pick one small step from the board and say who does it.

Picturing the dream isn't enough on its own. Psychologist Gabriele Oettingen (NYU and the University of Hamburg) and Heather Barry Kappes ran four experiments in which people who imagined an idealized future felt less energized afterward than people who pictured it more realistically or neutrally.

Their systolic blood pressure was lower too, a physical sign of that drop in energy. The study wasn't about couples or vision boards, and it measured energy in a lab, not relationships. So pair every picture with its obstacle and a first step.

Oettingen's method for this is WOOP: Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. The obstacle and first-step boxes on the worksheet are the same idea, sized for one evening.

I won't promise you that a board will strengthen your relationship. On my own boards, about half the wishes come true. On the board I made for my 34th birthday, it was 12 of 22.

With VISIYA Plus, a one-time purchase with no subscription, you can turn the board into iPhone lock screen wallpaper: tap "Create wallpaper," then Save, and choose "Save Image" in the share sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What should a couples vision board include?

Only goals you both want, about three in each of four areas: what matters most, relationship principles, mutual goals, and couple adventures and dates. Use your own photos, a real place or a date for each goal, and one sentence per area in your own words. Leave off other couples' photos and anything only one of you wants.

What goals should couples set together?

Concrete ones you can both say yes to: where you want to live in three years, what you're saving for and how much a month, how often you go on a real date, one trip in the next twelve months. Personal goals, like a promotion or a marathon, belong on your own boards.

How do you do a vision board date night?

Plan about an hour in 15-minute blocks. Answer the questions alone first, then compare your answers, then pick about three goals per area and give each one an obstacle and a first step. Use the last 15 minutes to build the board, on paper or in the app. The free VISIYA worksheet has the questions and the run sheet.

Can we both edit it on our phones?

Yes, and it's free. In VISIYA, open the board menu, tap Invite collaborators and send the code; your partner enters it under Join a board, and then you can both add pictures. You both need an iPhone or iPad. The shared board counts as your partner's board too, so on the free plan it's the one board you both have.
